Fuerza Bruta: Look Up!

Fuerza Bruta is mind-boggling and confusing at first glance, but does not disappoint. Created in 2002 by Argentinean Diqui James and Gaby Kerpel, it is a very rhythmic and artistic show, full of dancing moments, jumps and aerial choreographs that will entertain you for the full 70 minute length.

Fast and furious, Fuerza Bruta is translated to mean “brute strength,” and its energy has been appreciated by many celebrities such as Beyoncé, Jay Z, Ashton Kutcher, Russell Brand, Pierce Brosnan, Blake Lively, Jude Law and Kanye West (and many others). So when you go to the Daryl Roth Theatre (101 East 15th Street at Union Square East) please
do some VIP watching!
When you arrive, the staff leads you to a giant empty space – more of a club than an actual theater. The light is low, techno music is pumping out of some hidden speaker, the walls are painted black and the ceiling is covered with smoke, preventing you from seeing what’s behind the smoke curtain. When everyone is squeezed into the dark room, a recorded voice says that during the show everyone will stand and will have to move according to the staff’s instructions.
Then, suddenly, they turn off the lights and every thing starts. And it’s astonishing and unpredictable and so much fun. The main character is running on a treadmill, hit by cardboard walls. There are dancers, loud drum music, a D.J., water spraying all over the crowd, girls chasing each other while running 32 feet high on a huge silver curtain stretched around the audience, mobile structures moving all over the place and forcing every body to move. And then flashing-lights and explosions. And all of these things happen at least 10 feet high. You are always looking up in the air to see what’s going on.
The final act is the most breathtaking. A whole swimming pool is pulled down over the crowd’s heads, until we can touch it with our hands. Inside the pool, four beautiful girls appear-dancing, swimming, walking, diving and playing in the water. During the very last part they belly flop against the thin transparent bottom of the pool that separates them from all of us. We are all scared – will it hold? Yes, it does.
Fuerza Bruta is an artistic-dancing-speechless show that will deeply surprise you; something unique and energetic and unlike anything you will ever see.
